A review of the Hauppauge HD PVR 2

HD PVR 2 Gaming Edition

The Hauppauge HD PVR 2 is a device that allows gamers to record their gameplay on various platforms such as PS3, Xbox, and even older systems. It is easy to setup and comes with some great features such as:

                  - The ability upload straight to YouTube
                  - Easy start & end to recording

Though, it does have some extra 'proclaimed' features that just don't follow through. For instance, it claims to be able to record in HD 1080p for all systems, though once you purchase the item the fine print states that you can only record in up to 720p for all PlayStation systems due to the fact that Sony only allows limited gameplay capturing (so they say). It leaves you feeling ripped off a bit considering how much the device costs ($140).

Not only that, you also need to have separate voice recording software for video commentary due to the delay in capturing with the software. It is not a huge issue but it makes things more complicated than they have to be. If the company would have tested the product more thoroughly they would have a lot more sales and happy gamers, because everyone who purchased this version seems to be having the same issues. It just adds another step when you are editing your videos and makes the ability to upload straight to YouTube useless. Though, if you are not adding commentary, then this would not be an issue for you.

Lastly, you have to have the device on in order for your TV to function, and because it does allow HD capturing, you have to reset your PS3 to its regular (non HD) settings every time you record. Then you have to reset it again to see your PS3 in HD when not recording. Oddly, it still uses the HDMI cord for the PS3, and it is so picky to where you have to use the cord that came with this device. I am not sure if these issues apply to Xbox as I do not own one.

Overall, I would say this device is a good buy for budget gamers. This device comes with editing software, but it is very low grade and I only use it to convert the videos I record from MP4 to files that are compatible with you tube (a whole nother' issue in itself...but a manageable one). Despite all these issues, I still use it to save money, but one day I will definitely get a better device or just go completely to PC gaming.
